Sunlight Group achieves another milestone in the electrification of the maritime industry

Lehmann Marine, a subsidiary of the Group, secures a contract for the first fully electric ferries in the Port of Hamburg

Athens, 18 February 2026Sunlight Group, a member of the Olympia Group and a global leader in integrated and innovative energy storage technologies, announces a strategic agreement for its subsidiary, Lehmann Marine. The Hamburg-based Lehmann Marine has secured the largest contract to date, undertaking the supply of advanced battery systems for three new, fully electric passenger ferries that will be deployed in the Port of Hamburg.

With an implementation horizon set for 2028, these three ferries –the first all-electric passenger ferries of their kind in the region– will upgrade transportation on the River Elbe. Each 30-meter vessel will provide sustainable, high-frequency transport services, with a capacity to carry 250 passengers per trip.

Reaffirming its role in the broader maritime industrial shift, Lehmann Marine ensures top-tier performance through its specialized CUBE battery systems and Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP) technology. By utilizing modular energy storage systems with a capacity of 3.8 MWh per ferry, the project demonstrates that technological solutions for a sustainable maritime future are now mature and ready for large-scale application.

This strategic choice prioritizes the highest safety standards in shipping, proving that high operational performance is inextricably linked to safety. LFP technology is the ideal solution for modern passenger transport as its thermal stability remains unchanged even under the most demanding conditions, while it does not release oxygen in the event of overheating. This technical superiority ensures reliable and safe operational performance, enabling consistent high-frequency schedules and ensuring seamless urban mobility, even in high-traffic ports.

The transition to electrification delivers clear economic and operational advantages. Through optimized energy consumption and significantly lower maintenance requirements, the project establishes a high-performance model for urban transport. Simultaneously, this technology contributes to reducing urban pollution, supporting efforts to reduce emissions and noise levels in densely populated areas. By leveraging the appropriate technological infrastructure, the project demonstrates that environmental protection can work in parallel with commercial activity, enhancing quality of life and ensuring a seamless flow of transportation.

Labros Bisalas, CEO of Sunlight Group, stated: "The transition of the maritime industry to electrification is no longer an aspiration but an immediate industrial imperative. We are proud that our subsidiary, Lehmann Marine, is leading this transformation by securing the largest order in its history. At Sunlight Group, investing in maritime innovation is a strategic pillar of our mission: to develop the critical energy infrastructure that enables a carbon-neutral economy. This achievement –for which I congratulate the Lehmann Marine team– is tangible proof that specialized European technology can redefine urban mobility. We continue to pave the way in energy leadership, a path validated by our robust and ever-expanding portfolio of large-scale projects implemented worldwide."

As the majority shareholder, holding a 51% stake, Sunlight Group remains committed to providing the strategic support and necessary resources to further strengthen Lehmann Marine’s expertise. Through this support, Sunlight Group contributes substantially to the maritime industry’s transition toward a cleaner and more efficient energy model, with respect for the environment and local communities.
